Basic Terminology
Edo - the old name for Tokyo
Literally means the mouth of bay
Daimyo - Regional Samurai ruler.
During the Edo period, it meant the head of a central millitary government.
Tokugawa is a family name
Shogun - Title given to the military rulers

When Leyasa captured Osaka castle in 1615, peace prevailed througout the Edo period.
- Warriors taught themselves martial arts, literature, philosophy (tea ceremony)
Isolation policy
- In 1633, Shogun Lemitsu forbade traveling abroad
- almost completely isolated Japan in 1639
- limited trade relations in the port of Nagasaki
- all foreign books banned
- Only impact was from China and Dutch East India Company.
However,
agriculture still flourished
New forms of arts created
-kabuki →
-ukio-e → Centralized System
- The Bakufu (centralized government) had absolute political power over hans (local governments)
(could even remove or abolish them)
- Feudal society

Neo-Confucianism was majorly popular
- importance of morals, education, strict hierarchial order in society and government

By the mid 18th centurey, Edo had more than a million in population. (Osaka, Kyoto became trading centers) Transportation and Commerce
Bakufu opened 5 major highwys and major sea lanes
- Discouraged free moves of people and merchandise, so there were major check points called Sekisho.
Culture
-Chonindo - The way of townspeople's life
- Distinct in the cities such as Kyto, Osaka, Edo
= Encouraged aspiration to Bushido quality (The way of warriors or Samurai)
- Professional Female Entertainers (geisha)
- Music, Popular stories, Poetry, Kabuki and Bunraku (puppets) theater.
